Where do you get your inspiration (for your stories)?
A book often starts with something I know about (perhaps from past experiences like working in a bakery which led to Mr Cookie Baker) or something I don’t know much about but am curious about (such as bird-watching which led to Riki’s Birdhouse)
How do you feed your imagination?
I am always on the look out for things I want to learn more about. Maybe while I am traveling or reading or going to an exhibition I will find an idea that triggers a new project.
When did you know you wanted to be an author/illustrator?
I always loved to draw and paint when I was a child but I didn’t know then that that could be a job. I started out at a liberal arts college but transferred to art school when I realized I love to make things. First I was a potter but then I started to draw and paint again and that led to children’s books.
What do you hope young readers take away from your book(s)?
Curiosity to ask questions and to learn more about a new subject, whether it be cooking (Mr Cookie Baker), growing plants (Zinnia’s Flower Garden), or traveling to faraway places (Crepes by Suzette), for some examples.
What's your favorite children's book (written by someone else) and why?
One of my favorite books is: MISS RUMPHIUS written and illustrated by Barbara Cooney. The theme of the story is, You must do something to make the world more beautiful.
If you had to choose a children's book (written by someone else) to read to a preschooler, what would you choose and why?
ROSIE’S WALK by Pat Hutchins. This is a very funny book about a chicken and a fox, with just 32 words and dramatic pictures. Children will be very actively involved in the storytelling.
What's a fun fact about you?
I love riding my bicycle in New York City, and when I travel, in other cities such as Paris, London and Copenhagen. Cycling is a great way to get around!
